A lot of the time, I just want to check the status of my website’s ranking on Google. I don’t want to have to do anything more than that. I don’t want to bother with the whole search engine optimization thing, because it’s pretty much a waste of time if I don’t know whether or not my website is ranking high enough to get the attention of the search engines.
I totally understand. Its a lot less than one can do to optimise the SEO of your site.

For example, you can use the Google Adword Tool to give your website a quick assessment of what keywords are ranking well for on your pages and what keywords are not ranking for on your pages. This will give you a quick sense of what keywords are doing well and what keywords are doing poorly. You can then go look at the Google Adwords Console to identify ways you can improve your rankings.

I’m not saying you should put these keywords on your website. There are many websites out there that are doing great SEO, it’s just that all of them are doing it with keyword specific content.
With all of this talk about the power of keywords, I was surprised to learn that Google Adwords does not actually rank the keywords you choose. Instead, it actually ranks the text on your website. It then shows you in the Adwords Ads that the text is the highest ranking on that keyword. So if your website has been ranking well for a particular keyword, but not for all the keywords you choose, then your website might be missing out on some potential traffic.
This is why, for example, I can’t get clicks for words like “travel” and “travel in”. I have a link for “travel”, and when I click it, Google shows me that “travel in” is the best keyword in the world. But when I click on “travel in”, I am shown that the site is missing out on traffic because there is no link for “travel in.
